Up in the Chinese mountainside lies a breathing cabin left alone with the memories it holds. It's a place frozen in time, nothing comes and nothing goes.

Original Concept - Liu Yunpeng
The goal was to create an environment based on my Chinese heritage and I thought nothing could be better to represent the overwhelming number of times I've gone hiking on mountains all across China. The aesthetic chosen was inspired by traditional black and white Chinese ink wash paintings. So when I stumbled upon Liu Yunpeng's concept of a rickety house resting on a large boulder up in the Chinese mountains, I knew that's what I had to shoot for.

Process
Blockout began in Maya and was repeatedly imported to Unreal for perspective and proportion testing. Lighting and material passes slowly ramped up over time as more sculpts and kit pieces were being ramped up. It was a fun challenge to expand on the concept and add my own style.
Modular Kit
Here are the layouts for all my modular kit pieces and props. Responsible for all aspects.

High Poly
Beauty renders of sculpted high poly assets made for the environment.
Materials & Blending
This project mainly used tileable textures with a handful of baked reusable pieces. This process gave me a greater focus on the use of vertex painting and RGB masking.

I created RGB masks for any kit piece that had sculpted detail baked onto it. This allowed more of the sculpted detail to pop and added some very much needed texture variation.

Foliage
Sculpted in ZBrush, textured by hand in Substance Painter, and arranged in Maya.
Grass was made in Substance Designer
